One for good behavior and one for unacceptable behavior. Each time you notice your child make a poor choice you acknowledge the choice by having him remove a marble from his jar. Marbles may present a choking hazard to young children and the use of the reward jar should be supervised at all times by an adult. Never use the marble jar as a form of punishment the most important thing about using a behavior marble jar to encourage your child s initiative is to focus on rewarding those positive behaviors you want your child to repeat without using the jar as a form of punishment.

I like the marbles. But the whole idea behind it is that when the teacher observes appropriate behavior she puts a marble in the jar. But what is the marble to our system. The marble jar is one of my favorite classroom management tools because it is so easy and there are so many ways to use it.

Fill the undecorated jar with marbles and place both the filled jar and decorated jar on a high counter or table within your child s sight but out of her reach. There is a reward or consequence depending on which jar fills up first. Just in case you have never heard of the marble jar the basic idea is that you start with an empty jar and you add marbles to reward good behavior. This tool encourages on task behavior. When the jar is full your class gets a treat of some sort. You could also use velcroed marbles on a picture of a gumball machine or something like that. Each time students exhibit a desired behavior the teacher places a marble in the jar.
